Brothers In The Same Room

August 22nd, 2011

We have a two bedroom apartment so with the addition of child number two almost two years ago we had to put them in the same room.  I admit that I wish we had an extra room.  There are ways to make it work though and here is what I do.

At nap time I set up a pack N play in my bedroom and they sleep in separate rooms.  I do this because if they are together no matter how many times I warn them or ask them to be quiet, they just can’t! We spend the entire nap time asking them to be quiet and ignoring them just doesn’t work.  Also this helps when one gets up before the other one they are not waking each other up!

At night for awhile I was able to put the younger one down before my older one and he would go to sleep and stay asleep before big brother came to bed.  When he got old enough to know what was going on he would lay quietly and wait for big brother to come in and then they talked and got in trouble for a long time.  Instead of fighting them again I put my youngest back in the Pack N Play and once they are both asleep I carry him into his crib and he sleeps all night no problem.  The great things too is that he stays asleep when I carry him to his bed.

The only problem I have is that younger brother wakes up talking in the morning and likes to wake up big brother early.  Still haven’t figured out a way to solve this problem.  At least they know not to get up until their alarm clock turns green, otherwise they would be running around at 6:30 am instead of 7:30 am!

Do your kids share a room?  Do you wish they had a separate room or does it work for you?  How do your kids handle sharing?
