Can You Reuse a Car Seat?

September 27th, 2011

Can you reuse a car seat?  There are a couple of questions you need to ask before you can say yes for this answer.

You need to make sure that the car seat has it’s original stickers on it and has the users manual. Also make sure by looking at the label that the car seat has not expired.  Usually car seats are good for 6 years. If it does not have an expiration date listed then it is 6 years past the manufacturer date that it is good.

Make sure the car seat has not been in a car crash.  If a car seat has been in a car crash of any kind you need to replace the car seat as there could be unknown cracks in the plastic and cause injury.

Make sure the car seat as not been recalled by clicking HERE.  If recalled make sure that it is all up to date before using.

If your not sure if it is usable or not and you got a used car seat from an unreliable source than don’t use it.  Personally I would not get one from a consignment shop and only a close friend that knows the history of the car seat and is reliable.
